Jimeni: Building Back, Building Better

Since 1964, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has assisted the people of the Dominican Republic to better their lives, more effectively use resources, and attain economic advancement.

In May 2004 the world witnessed devastating floods along the Blanco River. During these floods over 700 people died and more than 300 families lost their homes. Clearly this would hamper the abilities of the people in poverty stricken Jimaní to pull themselves out of poverty. Action was needed and UNDP was there to help.

The UNDP office in the Dominican Republic launched a response to the humanitarian emergency which included not only immediate assistance, but also long term rehabilitation and reconstruction in Jimaní. Included in this holistic response were short term monetary assistance, educational programs for youth, and rebuilding structures in the communities.

As part of the rebuilding efforts, Mr. Ramón Martínez facilitated generous contributions from the Boston Red Sox Foundation and the Toronto Blue Jays to the U.S. Committee for UNDP. These were combined with the resources of UNDP, the local non profit organization Sur Furturo, and the Government of the Dominican Republic to construct 50 new homes.

These 2 and 3 bedroom homes will not only restore lives, but also provide families with refuge from natural disasters thanks to reinforced concrete roofs and foundations. These strengthened homes will help families in this community thrive by reducing the likelihood that they will again endure the loss and suffering that they experienced as a result of the disaster in 2004.

The construction of these homes was completed in September 2005. In September the Vice-President of the Dominican Republic, Mr. Rafael Alburquerque, toured the community and pledged that the installation of government services would be completed in October 2005.

A Rapid Response

In May 2004 a tropical storm hit the Domician Republic, causing mud slides and flooding in the Southwest of the small island nation.

Hardest hit was the town of Jimani, where 400 people were killed and 500 families lost their homes.

UNDP quickly partnered with the government and local non-profits to put together an emergency response project to help the affected area.

Meanwhile, in America, several Dominican baseball players reached out to their local community's and, in partnership with UNDP-USA, raised the funds to rebuild 50 houses.
