Progress Update

Moving Forward

In late July, 97 Somali women successfully completed their first semester of University at the Somali Institute of Management and Administration Development (SIMAD) in Mogadishu. Among these promising students is Dahabo, an Information Technology student who finished high school in 2006. She was unable to afford college until the Somali Women's Scholarship Fund gave her the chance. A Business Administration student, Farhiya, writes that thanks to the Somali Women's Scholarship Fund "...Somali ladies will get their share from the national cake. I hope I can donate to people who need help when I grow up!" Many of the students currently enrolled at SIMAD are already giving back to their communities by helping over 200 women in their communities learn to read and write. UNDP-USA Executive Director Visits Somalia

Elizabeth Latham, UNDP-USA Executive Director, recently returned from a visit to Somalia to see some of the work that UNDP is engaged in.

"I was amazed and impressed with the hopefulness of the people that I met during my stay in Somalia. Somalia is a conservative Muslim nation and I was impressed to see that in some areas women are being empowered, thanks to investments in education. For example, the women in this photo rose to the top of their class and, despite many obstacles, decided to join the first ever female police unit."
