Tips for a Successful Event

Play to your talents

Do you love to cook? Have a knack for knitting? Think about how to turn resources and skills into fundraising opportunities. Also think about the interests of your audience and choose an activity that you think they will enjoy.

Publicize the event

Publicity and advertising are the keys to a successful event. For larger events, take advantage of local media. Send out invitations as soon as possible and follow up with periodic reminders. If you want help coordinating online invitations, reminders and RSVPs please contact us at partnerships@undp-usa.org.

Utilize Donations

You can easily throw an event without spending any money. Ask local grocery stores, restaurants, retail stores and other businesses to give a tax-deductible donation (See our sample donation letter ). Be sure to thank those who contribute (Sample thank you letter). Remember, don’t be shy! The most common reason that people don’t donate is because they are not asked!

Don’t go it alone

Consider working with others to double (or triple!) your fundraising ability.

Set your goals

Set clear fundraising goals, keeping in mind the scale and focus of your event. Remember to pace yourself and be aware of time constraints. A clear fundraising objective motivates people to help you, so let everyone know what your goal is and how close you are to reaching it!

Have Fun!

UNDP-USA Executive Director Visits Somalia

Elizabeth Latham, UNDP-USA Executive Director, recently returned from a visit to Somalia to see some of the work that UNDP is engaged in.

"I was amazed and impressed with the hopefulness of the people that I met during my stay in Somalia. Somalia is a conservative Muslim nation and I was impressed to see that in some areas women are being empowered, thanks to investments in education. For example, the women in this photo rose to the top of their class and, despite many obstacles, decided to join the first ever female police unit."
