University Partners

These seven universities spread throughout Somalia are partnering with UNDP to provide scholarships to Somali women:

Puntland State University - PSU offers skills and professional training courses, awarding recognized accredited certificates, diplomas, and degrees in the fields of national priority and those with potential local and regional markets.

University of Hargeisa - The vision of UOH is to provide appropriate knowledge and training at all levels to meet the nation's immediate and long-term needs for reconstruction and development.

East African University, Bosaso - Bosaso College of Training and Computer Engineering is committed to providing university education of the highest quality to prepare students for professional and managerial positions.

Somali Institute of Management and Administration Development (SIMAD)

Mogadishu University-Features a Center for Community Services & Continuing Education, the Institute for Somali Studies and Somali Center for Water and Environment, and Institute of Languages.

Amoud University-First institution of higher learning established after the war which features a broad range of programs including law, medicine, agriculture, business, information technology education, and public administration.

University of Burao- Newly opened university offering degrees and certificates in Veterinary Medicine, business, finance, education, and Islamic Studies.

UNDP-USA Executive Director Visits Somalia

Elizabeth Latham, UNDP-USA Executive Director, recently returned from a visit to Somalia to see some of the work that UNDP is engaged in.

"I was amazed and impressed with the hopefulness of the people that I met during my stay in Somalia. Somalia is a conservative Muslim nation and I was impressed to see that in some areas women are being empowered, thanks to investments in education. For example, the women in this photo rose to the top of their class and, despite many obstacles, decided to join the first ever female police unit."
